The Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities Family Support Services Program assists families who support at home a family member with developmental disabilities. The program promotes unity of the family by assisting it to meet the special needs of eligible individuals. It also assists the individual to maximize self-sufficiency and prevent inappropriate institutionalization.
What is Family Support Services?
Family Support Services is a program that sets aside money for families who have members with a DD. This money is used to reimburse families who purchase allowable items or services to help them take care of the person with a DD at home.
Who can receive this money?
The family of an individual who is eligible to receive DD services and lives in the family home may be eligible to receive monies from Family Support Services. For individuals who are not receiving other services from the Ottawa County Board of DD, contact Jim Crist for eligibility determination at 419-898-0400, 419-734-6650, or 866-755-4440.
What can this money be used for?
Family Support Services funds can be used for a number of items including:
Respite Care - in or out of the home
Counseling, Training, & Education
Specialized Equipment - wheelchairs, braces, exercise aids, etc.
Home Modifications - to make it more accessible to the individual with DD (ex: widening of doorways, lowering shelves, etc.)
Continued Skill Development of the individual with DD
Other services consistent with the purpose of FSS - promotes the unity of the family and assists the individual to maximize self-sufficiency
